Prince of Peace

We live in a world that has turned this season of heavenly peace into a season of chaos, confusion, and commercialism. Some people turn their focus to self, others turn their focus on family and friends, and others turn their focus on all that is wrong in the world. Our focus should be on Christ and the celebration of His birth, which is the true reason for this season. Jesus Christ is our Prince of Peace when nothing else seems peaceful.

Christmas has become a season of chaos. We have presents to buy, tables to set, and programs to perform. Moms have been dubbed the “chaos coordinators”, which is appropriate and accurate in the daily juggling of schedules. In the rush to do all the things and meet all the needs, we allow the anxiety and the stress to overwhelm us and we begin to resent the holiday. But let us never resent the reason we celebrate the holiday, the birth of Jesus Christ. We turn to our Prince of Peace “casting all [our] anxieties on Him, because He cares for [us].” 1 Peter 5:7.

Christmas has become a season of confusion. In the frantic and hectic busyness, we miscommunicate and misinterpret. We lose track of hours, days, and weeks and forget who, what, where, and when we needed to see, do, go, and be. We usher in confusion in the name of peace on earth, but we lose focus of the Prince of Peace. “For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.” 1 Corinthians 14:33. When we remember the manger then we are able to rest in the good news of great joy for all people. There is no confusion in Christ, but only peace and calm.

Christmas has become a season of commercialism. We make our lists and check them twice to ensure that our loved ones receive what they want, need, and much more. We envelope ourselves in physical comfort and material need instead of laying down our spiritual needs at the stable in worship. We get consumed with greed and desire. In this season of giving we escalate ourselves as givers and focus on the receivers in our lives instead of appreciating the ultimate gift from the Giver of Life. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” John 14:27. When we are tempted to give as the world gives, let us turn our hearts and minds to our Prince of Peace. Let us rest in the gift of His birth and in His sacrifice to save the world. Jesus Christ provided us peace with God and no material gift can ever compare.

This Christmas Eve, let us banish the chaos, confusion, and commercialism of Christmas and let us return to the true worship of our Wonderful Counselor, our Mighty God, our Everlasting Father, and our Prince of Peace. Jesus Christ is our Prince of Peace when nothing else seems peaceful. Let us sleep in His heavenly peace and praise Him for humbling Himself on our behalf to grant us eternal peace with God.
