The Gift of Faithfulness

The hymn “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” has seemed to be on repeat in the background of my life the past couple years. I find myself humming it to myself or singing it aloud often and it ushers in calm and rest when I am feeling weary and worn. In times of trial or temptation, the Lord is so faithful to remind me that He is constant, He is true, and His love is eternal. The faithfulness of the Lord is His great gift to mothers and in our weakness He is proven strong.

Thou changest not Thy compassions they fail not. As Thou has been Thou forever will be.” (Thomas Chisholm) The Lord’s gift of faithfulness to mothers includes His constant being and nature, regardless of our effort. His faithfulness is not dependent on our acceptance of Him or our own faithfulness towards Him. He is faithful because He is Himself, “I AM WHO I AM” (Exodus 3:14). What a great hope that when we fail in patience towards our children or in taking joy in the everyday MOMents, we can rest in the knowledge that God remains faithful. “When we are faithless, He remains faithful- for He cannot deny Himself” (2 Timothy 2:13). The character and nature of the Lord is unchanging across time, history, and space. He promises to be faithful to His people because He is faithful. This gift of faithfulness is a reassurance to mothers in every changing season of life and stage of parenthood.

God’s gift of faithfulness to mother is shown through His steadfast truth to His word. So often as mothers we feel like we are not doing enough to teach and train our children. We could be reading them more stories, we could be cooking more meals from scratch, or we could be investing in more activities to develop their interests and skills. So often we get stuck in the comparison game and begin to feel like we are not enough. First Thessalonians 5:24 promises, “He who calls you is faithful; He will surely do it.” This verse refers to the sanctification of believers and how the Lord is faithful to cleanse and purify His believers. In the MOMents where we feel like we are not enough, let us remember that the Lord is faithful! He has called us to this role of motherhood and He is faithful to accomplish His work in and through us. He is true to His word to restore us through the process of parenthood. He is true to His word to make Himself known to our children and He is so gracious to allow us to be part of that great work. The Lord gifts His faithfulness to mothers by remaining true to His word and covering our lack.

A peace that endureth. Thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide. Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow.“ (Thomas Chisholm) The Lord’s gift of faithfulness is given through His eternal love. The Lord promises, “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.” (Jeremiah 31:3). The pressures we face day to day are momentary, but the love of the Lord is eternal. This world may strip away our physical bodies, our children may stamp out our sanity, and our own sin may threaten to overwhelm us; “But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22-23). We receive the gift of His faithfulness in His great love that is eternal, everlasting, and steadfast.

“New mercies I see

All I have needed Thy hand hath provided

Great is Thy Faithfulness

Lord unto me.” (Thomas Chisholm)
